WHEN THE idea for this « white issue » first came up, we naturally started thinking about California. Our fashion editor France de Jerphanion proposed a shoot on the beach to highlight one of the season’s major trends: hippie-chic lace. Joined by photographer Ami Sioux, model Langley Fox and a white horse named Fleur de Lys, our team headed for Westward Beach in Malibu – coincidentally where Charlton Heston’s character finds the half-buried Statue of Liberty in the fnal scene of Planet of the Apes.

“REI KAWAKUBO is taking the Hermès square scarf into new, more abstract territory,” says Bali Barret, acting creative director of the Hermès women’s collections and originator of the “Comme des Carrés” limited edition. Barret describes the Comme des Garçons founder as “more than a fashion designer, a true innovator,” who had already demonstrated in her own collections “a flairfor the silk scarf.”
